11 Signs That You Were Born In California

Eleven Signs That You Were Born In California:

1. You’ve never called it “Cali.”
The only people who call it “Cali” aren’t from California. It’s not that anyone has to tell you not to say it, people just don’t. I think it’s a respect thing. It feels almost like calling your mother by her first name. I’m cringing just thinking about it.
2. Burritos are a constant topic of conversation while abroad.
My Japanese friend was convinced that “you know Californians miss home when they start talking about burritos.” True enough, in-depth discussions about missing our burrito joints of choice would come up even more often than being apart from our families.
Burritos are a unifying part of the Californian experience — black, Asian, gay, poor, rich, or Ke$ha, you love a dank-ass burrito.
3. Other English speakers don’t understand your English.
Speaking of dank-ass food, we don’t speak the same English other Americans do. Sometimes phrases like, “How gnar was that shit?” or, “James was hella butthurt so he just bailed” do warrant translation.
4. You’ve asked someone, “Why do you live there?”
A pissed off Rhode Islander came up to me one afternoon. “God you Californians suck so bad!” I asked her why. “Whenever I say I’m from Rhode Island, they just ask me why. Like, why do I live somewhere that isn’t California.” I tried to sympathize, but honestly I have no idea why anyone would want to live in Rhode Island.
5. Living somewhere rainy makes you seriously depressed.
I was living in Taipei for a while, which despite being a super fun party town, has some of the suckiest weather outside of London. After months of grey weather I was bummed for no real reason until one day, in a quiet alleyway, the sun finally muscled its way through the clouds and onto my skin. I was immediately way happier.
Later, when my friends visited me, they expressed sincere concern about my state of being because I was no longer tan. We are a solar-powered people.
6. You’re the best fucking driver around.
People complain about Californian drivers like we suck or something. Quite the contrary! We have more practice than anybody at it, weaving through lanes and circumventing traffic with our eyes closed. Our skills can shave 20 minutes off a drive in traffic that would reduce lesser drivers into sobbing lumps of existential despair. And yeah, we know this is bad for the environment. We assuage our guilt with compost heaps and Priuses. Prii?
7. You act all tough whenever there’s an earthquake.
“Oh you think that was bad? You shoulda been there for Northridge, now that was a gnarly quake,” you tell those scared non-Californians after a little rumble. True, we have a lot more experience with earthquakes than most people, but they still scare us. Not that we’re going to admit it, though.
8. Snow kinda freaks you out.
Sure you go snowboarding in the winter, but snow is a pretty foreign concept off the slopes.Last time I was in Brooklyn it was a particularly chilly December evening. I was walking out of the subway when the road looked kind of weird. “Dude, snow!” I said to the guy next to me. “Yeah, what about it?” he said. “Dude!” I said, at a lost for words. He shook his head and walked away.
9. You’ve got a special PCH playlist.
Driving Pacific Coast Highway is a special occasion. It’s usually a day when you’re not in a terrible rush slogging around on the 5, and you can really roll down the windows and enjoy the smell of the sea. What’s actually on the list is really personal, but you can never go wrong with the Beach Boys.
10. You have an incorrigible avocado habit.
In other parts of the country, avocados are an expensive luxury. I’ve seen New Yorkers cradling a sorry-looking avocado they just paid three dollars for. We just put avocados on everything because their creamy decadence makes all of our fresh food taste even better.
11. In-N-Out, dude.
I can’t write an article about California without any mention of what In-N-Out means to us. We have access to every variety of gourmet burger imaginable, from Kobe beef patties to buns make out of ramen, but all these weird permutations are only brief distractions from the pure burger bliss of In-N-Out.
It’s the perfect harmony of the fresh tomato and lettuce. It’s the lightly toasted bun. The thicker than Kim Kardashian milk shakes. That gross-but-satisfying post burger onion breath. In-N-Out doesn’t ever change it’s menu, because there is no improving on perfection. Any Californian who has ever left California for an extended period of time knows that coming in for a Double Double Animal Style is the only homecoming ceremony that means anything.
East Coast idiots might try to tell you that Shake Shack or Five Guys Burgers and Fries1 are comparable, even better, but their taste is suspect; they live on the wrong coast, after all.
Sorry, but that place should definitely be a sausage joint. Just saying...

Borninfornia Shirts and Tanks
Borninfornia Shirts Waiting Patiently To Be Shipped!

Great News!

All Kickstarter Rewards (shirts) have been delivered! There may have been some small and big hiccups along the way (we like to call them learning on the go), we were able to push through and finally get the shirts delivered. So far, we have only heard good things about the shirts and have seen many photos pop up on Instagram with the hashtag #borninfornia.

Now that Kickstarter is done, what's next? Since the day borninfornia was born, we always wanted to sale our products on our own e-commerce site. With the Kickstarter phase now complete, we are able to focus all of our attention on tackling this next phase. We do own the domain www.Borninfornia.com and have a minimal site working but it is no where near being finished. Also, all of the products listed on www.Borninfornia.com are currently out of stock because we don't have enough inventory left over after we shipped all the Kickstarter packages out.

Danny and I are evaluating our current Borninfornia shirt offerings and are going to begin a second round of shirt production to build up inventory for the website. Most of the shirts featured on our Kickstarter Campaign will still be for sale on our site (soon) but honestly we are most excited about the new shirt designs that we have been working on for the past few months. We plan to have the site up and running with items for sale in 6-8 weeks -  although we have learned from the first production run that unforeseen events can quickly alter timelines. Practice makes perfect, though, right?!

Welp, that's all for now. We haven't posted in a while and feel bad that we haven't so we are going to try to post more frequently regarding topics such as Borninfornia, California, funny jokes, and everything else we think you guys might be entertained by.

Much love!

Printing Is Complete!

We are so excited to finally be able to announce that all the printing of Borninfornia shirts has finally been completed. We know that this announcement is long over due and we are so thankful for your continued patience and support.

It has truly been a stressful and trying couple of months after we found out that our original printer was part of a lawsuit and had to cut ties with us. We had been working with this printer for several months in preparation before we even launched our Kickstarter and it was extremely disappointing to hear that we had legally had to stop working with them after our many hours and countless late nights spent working with them. We are very much looking forward to day we are able to once again work with them but until then we found a very dependable local printer (after several weeks of searching) that will complete our work for the near future.

Our main goal from Day 1 has been to offer high-quality apparel that is Made in California. Now that our first full run of shirts is done we are excited to say that we were able to stay true to our main goal. When we say our clothing is made in California, we mean it. Every aspect of our shirts, even the print ink itself, was made in California. The designs were made in Santa Cruz. The shirt blanks came from Los Angeles. The shirt printing was completed in San Diego and the cut and sew aspects will be completed in San Diego as well. We possibly could have gotten better quality printing done outside of California but we never even considered that option as Borninfornia is all about being 100% California.

We cannot begin to express how disappointed we are that this project two a couple of months longer than anticipated to be delivered to your doorstep but the wait is nearly over! The next step is that we must have the pocket and patch designs cut and sewn onto the shirts and the clip labels attached to the hip area of every shirt. This process should be fairly quick as the shop we are using complete cut & sew projects for their main source of income. We are dropping the shirts off to have these final steps completed and then will host a major packing and shipping party to make sure we get you your shirts ASAP!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or would rather receive a full refund instead of your Borninfornia shirts please contact us via email using borninfornia@gmail.com. Also, we have the very basics of a website up and running if you want to check it out at www.Borninfornia.com. It is nothing pretty and we aren't selling any product on it as of now but hope so in the very near future.

Much Love,
Andrew & Danny

www.Borninfornia.com Is Live!!!

It's probably long overdue, but www.Borninfornia.com is finally live!

It's not yet possible to place an order on the site as we are still fulfilling Kickstarter pledges but we can't wait to get this puppy fully functional in the next month or so. If you see any glitches or areas of improvement, we would love to hear about them!

Production Well Underway!

Hello Everybody!
It has been far too long since we have last checked in, hope you have missed us as much as we have missed you!
Here is just a little bit of what we have been up to. We have been working closely with a brand new printing agency right here in the heart of San Diego. They have been stellar so far and it is very exciting to be working with a fellow startup that is literally down the street from our two houses. Right now most of our Bear Republic Tees and Borninfornia Logo Tees have been printed! We will be sharing pictures very soon.
We finally have all of our ducks in a row as far as legality in the Golden State, it feels great to be prepared to sell clothing to individuals throughout California, the United States, and around the globe.
And finally, as we prep for shipping soon we have also been working on new designs that you are going to LOVE. As always, any suggestions are welcomed with open arms.
Goodbye for now, keep an eye out for pictures of your rewards coming soon!

Weird California Laws

Now everybody knows California is pretty dang awesome - amazing beaches, great surf, Disneyland, warm weather year round, etc. But there are some pretty odd and unusual aspects about California, including the following laws:

  • In California, a frog that dies while competing in a frog-jimping contest may not be eaten later.
  • In California, it is a misdemeanor to fire a gun at any type of game from a vehicle, unless the target is a whale.
  • In California, it is illegal for women to drive in a house coat.
  • In California, no vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 MPG.
  • In California, animals are banned from publicly mating with 500 yards of a tavern, school, or church.
  • In California,  house sellers must warn potential buyers if their house is thought to be haunted.
  • In California, it is a punishable crime to not relinquish the phone in an emergency situation.
  • In California, it is illegal to sell or prescribe liquid silicone for breast implants.
  • In California, it is illegal to shoot a turtle.
  • In California, it is illegal to capture or sell a chipmunk.
  • In California, it is a crime to peddle geese or turkey eggs as chicken eggs.
  • In California, it is a crime to hunt with a crossbow while intoxicated.

Order Has Been Placed!

Danny and I spent the majority of last night putting together a bulk order to place with our shirt supplier. They have confirmed receipt of the order and plan on beginning shirt production starting early next week. The production of the shirts will be done right down the street from Danny's house and my apartment so we are going to be a part of the process of the entire time and be able to perform quality control checks throughout the production process.

Not only will we be able to keep an eye on the process but we will also be able to be a part of the production process by working the printer and sewing on labels and pockets ourselves. This is very exciting for us because we have always wanted to be a part of the entire process and by choosing a local supplier we are able to do this. We are both hands on people and are very excited to be able to help produce the shirts ourselves.

We will throw up some pictures next week once the production process starts and we will continue to keep you guys updated throughout the entire process.

Cheers,
Andrew & Daniel

10-hours Left!

This is it. The final countdown. The last hurrah. The conclusion. In less than 10-hours Borninfornia's Kickstarter Campaign will be complete. But fear not, this isn't the end - this is just the beginning! Once the campaign ends and the funds clear, that's when the real fun begins as we start the production of Borninfornia's Statewide Collection.
This is the final time we will be making the following request - please share Borninfornia's Campaign with your social network by using http://kck.st/14ED60N. Facebook it. Tweet it. Instagram it. Text it. Myspace it. Sign language it. Smoke signal it. Whatever it takes, spread the word!
Just remember that every single time you decide to not share our campaign, one innocent child receives a mullet haircut. Just think about that... Do you really want that on your conscience?
This is it. It's game time.
The Borninfornia Bear is hungry. Let's feed it.

One Week Left!

7-days left for Borninfornia's Kickstarter Campaign and we need less than $200 to hit our goal of $5,000! Danny and I couldn't be more excited as we are slowly but ever so surely getting closer to making Borninfornia become a reality! All we need is to average $24 for the next week and we will hit our goal and finally be able to start production!

91% Funded And Growing!

We are excited to announce that the Borninfornia Kickstarter.com Campaign surpassed $4,500 in funding earlier today! That means that the campaign is now over 90% funded with only 9-days to go!

At this point, we need an average of $42 per day to reach our ultimate goal of $5,000. We truly think that this is possible but we really need your help for our dream of a Borninfornia brand to become a reality! Even if you aren't able to financially support the campaign yourself, a simple share on your Facebook or Instagram account would mean the world to us. For the purpose of sharing on social media platforms, it is easier to use the following shortened URL that will direct your network straight to the Borninfornia Campaign: http://kck.st/14ED60N

Thanks again for all the support! Without your guys' help, this wouldn't be possible and for that we are eternally grateful!

Best Wishes,
Andrew & Daniel
